Viking music in Old Norse about Odin waking a dead völva (Norse witch) from her grave, from Baldrs draumar (Baldr's Dreams) in the Poetic Edda: the seeress who foretold the death of Baldr.
Dark Nordic folk and pagan ritual music with a völva voice, bone rattles, a galloping shamanic drum and kulning, for meditation and deep focus.
The sixth ritual of Erilaz Rites, for lovers of Norse mythology and Viking history: at the eastern gate of Hel, the dead witch rises and speaks against her will.
Baldr, the most beloved of the gods, began to dream of his own death. Odin saddled Sleipnir and rode down to Niflhel. A hound came out of Hel to meet him, its chest soaked in blood. At the eastern door of Hel's hall, where a seeress lay buried, Odin chanted valgaldr, the spell that raises the dead, until she rose. Hiding behind the name Vegtamr, the Wanderer, he asked her about Baldr's dreams. She told him that the mead was already brewed for Baldr, that his blind brother Höðr would kill him, and that Váli, son of Rindr, would avenge him at one night old. After every answer she said the same words: "Nauðug sagðak, nú mun ek þegja", I spoke against my will, now I will be silent. In the end she recognized him: "You are not Vegtamr. You are Odin." And she sent him home, swearing that no one would wake her again until Loki breaks free and Ragnarök comes.
This is Norse mythology, not history: Baldrs draumar, a poem of the Poetic Edda preserved in an Icelandic manuscript from around 1300 (stanzas 2–14).
Most of the lyrics are the original Old Norse words of the poem. The opening of the chorus ("Völu leiði, rís þú, völva") is ours.
