My sister and I spent a lot of time in Southeast Kentucky while we were growing up - time with our Grandma Hatfield, our uncles, aunts, and cousins. Some of the best times of our lives! This time in those hills and mountains gave me roots, and I look back on those memories often. This song arose from my ties to that place, the Appalachian mountains, and ancestors. I'm playing my new-to-me Warren May late 1980's dulcimer. I love it! I'm honored to have one of his instruments (He is from Berea, KY, and both of my parents went to college there, and my mom's mom lived there for a while - great town!) I hope you enjoy the song. Thank you for listening! Song is ©️2024 Carol L Hatfield I Brought the Mountains ©2024 Carol L Hatfield I was born in Indiana But I brought the mountains high All the hills and secret valleys And the rivers ripplin’ by They were shared by my father Were a gift from my mom Always they walk with me That feeling of home The roots, they hold so strong and call me by name I know where I’m coming from and tomorrow is warm with my flame I may not know all the places Nor remember everything But the times that I stood right there I heard the spirits sing: The tree bent to the water Birds that flock through the glen The rocks on the peak, so daring The arc of sky with no end [Chorus] So many who came before me I can hear them too My heart is lit on the inside And I know it’s shinin’ through I was born in Indiana But I brought the mountains high All the hills and secret valleys And the rivers ripplin’ by [Chorus}
