He completed a course at Chhayanaut Sangeet Bidyayatan and took initial lessons in classical music from Narayan Chandra Basak, of Pabna. He later trained under Ustad Sagiruddin Khan for an extended period. Shakil’s prowess in Nazrul Sangeet developed under the tutelage of his uncle Mahmudur Rahman Benu, Sheikh Lutfur Rahman, Sohrab Hossain, Anjali Roy, and Nilufar Yasmeen, among others. Khairul Anam Shakil currently teaches Nazrul Sangeet at Chhayanaut and Dhaka University. He is the Vice-President of Chhayanaut and a trustee of the Nazrul Institute. He received the Nazrul Puroskar in 2017 and the Ekushey Padak in 2019.
