Critical thinking is not the enemy of belief. It is the enemy of certainty without evidence — and in Pakistan, we have built entire systems, institutions, and childhoods on exactly that. In this episode of HashCritical, I address university students directly: the people who are still early enough in their intellectual lives to choose discomfort over delusion.
We cover the full spectrum: whether critical thinking is inherently hostile to faith; where gambling, speculation, and business sit on the same risk continuum; whether religion itself functions as a high-stakes proposition; why the basis of every decision is never purely belief; what we actually give up when we offer prayers; why information is structurally incomplete and what that means for certainty; how to dissect a simple decision using a price-value framework; the evidence on whether religiosity and national progress are negatively correlated; how we systematically mislead our children; why we prefer comfortable lies to uncomfortable facts; and how appeal to authority bypasses the reasoning we should be doing ourselves.
This is not an attack on religion. It is an intervention on thinking — the kind we were never taught in school, in mosque, or at home. If the questions in this episode make you uncomfortable, that discomfort is the point. That friction is where thinking actually begins.
Which of these questions have you never been allowed to ask out loud — and why? Tell me in the comments.
