Gilad Doron – IMG Academy Volleyball: Lessons from a Lifetime in Coaching

What is the most important value for programs and coaches that is forgotten these days? Gilad Doron, current Volleyball Director at IMG Academy, has spent more than three decades experiencing the game from nearly every angle, including Villanova, the University of San Francisco, and Dartmouth, and gives the answer. The episode is live now on all platforms! Gilad's volleyball journey began in Kibbutz Ein Hamifratz, Israel, where he played professionally for Mate Asher and won four Israeli League championships and two Israeli Cups. He represented Israel internationally for a decade. He began coaching in Israel, leading Mateh Asher to a national championship before taking his career to the United States. Over the following decades, Gilad built an extensive career in American volleyball. After coaching at Temple University and founding the Philadelphia Volleyball Academy, he became head coach at Villanova, where he engineered one of the biggest single-season turnarounds in BIG EAST history. At the University of San Francisco, he became the winningest coach in program history, led the Dons to an NCAA Tournament appearance and a No. 22 national ranking, and helped establish the university's beach volleyball program. He later spent seven seasons leading Dartmouth's program in the Ivy League, followed by a coaching role at Army West Point. Today, Gilad serves as Director of Volleyball at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, helping shape a developing program and the next generation of student-athletes. In this episode, we explore his transition from professional player to coach, the challenges of building and rebuilding programs, recruiting and developing athletes, and the differences between coaching internationally and within the American collegiate system. We also dive into leadership, building a winning culture, and how a coach's role changes across different stages of a career.
