Two Big Eyes Staring Back at Me! | Southern Boobook at Burns Beach 🦉
While walking along the coastal path at Burns Beach, Western Australia, I was suddenly drawn to the sound of agitated calls coming from a nearby tree. A Red Wattlebird and a Butcherbird were making quite a commotion, repeatedly calling around the branches.
I looked up to see what had attracted their attention — and there, staring straight back down at me, were two enormous eyes belonging to a Southern Boobook!
The Southern Boobook (Ninox boobook)is Australia's smallest and most widespread owl species and is a familiar but often elusive resident of woodlands, parks, gardens and coastal areas. They are predominantly nocturnal, spending much of the day quietly roosting in trees before becoming active after dark.
Boobooks are skilled hunters, feeding on a variety of prey including insects, spiders and small vertebrates. Their large forward-facing eyes are perfectly suited to detecting movement in low light, while their superb hearing helps them locate prey after sunset.
What makes this encounter particularly interesting is the reaction of the other birds. **Mobbing behaviour**, where smaller birds aggressively call at or harass a potential predator, is well documented in Southern Boobooks. The Red Wattlebird and Butcherbird had clearly noticed the owl before I did — and their alarm calls led me straight to it!
🌊 Burns Beach
Burns Beach is part of Perth's beautiful northern coastline, where coastal vegetation, mature trees and surrounding natural habitat provide valuable refuge for a surprising variety of birdlife. The coastal path offers wonderful opportunities to experience Western Australia's wildlife while enjoying views along the Indian Ocean.
It's encounters like this that remind me that you never know what you might discover when you're simply out for a walk. Sometimes, all it takes is listening carefully to the birds around you.
