Gioachino Rossini — Il barbiere di Siviglia “La calunnia è un venticello” — Don Basilio’s Aria Feodor Chaliapin — bass Orchestra conducted by Rosario Bourdon Recorded: 18 March 1927, Camden, New Jersey Matrix: CVE 26102-6 Original issue: Victor 6783 One of the great documents of Feodor Chaliapin’s art, restored with the aim of recovering the physical presence of the performance rather than creating a polished modern recording. In the original source, much of the upper harmonic structure, room information, and fine vocal detail is buried beneath the limitations of the recording medium. The ArchiveMaestro restoration attempts to recover that information while preserving the character of the 1927 recording. What emerges is striking: Chaliapin’s bass is no longer simply a large dark tone from an old record. The minute fluctuations of the voice, the trembling and changes in pressure, the articulation, and the acoustic response around him become audible again. The orchestra also regains depth and movement. Some original surface noise has deliberately been retained. Removing it completely would also remove information belonging to the voice and the performance. The objective is not silence. It is presence. 🎼 ArchiveMaestro — Restoring the Performance, Not Rewriting It Historical recording restored from the source shown for this edition. #FeodorChaliapin #Chaliapin #Rossini #BarberOfSeville #LaCalunnia #DonBasilio #Opera #Bass #HistoricalRecording #AudioRestoration #ArchiveMaestro
