While researching Joan of Arc in the ancient city of Rouen, writer Simon Crutchley becomes fascinated by the mysterious figure of a young woman who appears night after night, silently weeping beneath a tree in the secluded courtyard of his old hotel. As his obsession grows, the hotel staff react with increasing fear, warning him away from the room overlooking the courtyard. But Crutchley cannot resist discovering the woman's identity—and when she finally reveals her face, he learns the dreadful meaning of becoming "one who saw." A subtle masterpiece of mounting psychological terror, One Who Saw demonstrates Burrage's extraordinary ability to create horror through atmosphere, suggestion, and the slow, inexorable pull of the supernatural rather than overt shocks.
