Some of the most familiar cheese products in UK supermarkets contain surprisingly little cheese. Others cost significantly more than a plain block, despite containing added starch, vegetable oils or processed ingredients.
We examined 12 popular UK cheese products — and found 4 alternatives worth considering.
In this investigation, we take a closer look at products from Tesco, Morrisons, M&S, Dairylea, Cathedral City and Cheestrings. We compare cheese content, ingredients, price per kilogram, misleading-looking packaging and the important differences hidden in product labels.
Some processed cheese slices contain as little as 11% cheese. Certain grated varieties cost around 25% more per kilogram than a comparable block. And some cheese alternatives rely heavily on coconut oil and starch rather than dairy.
We also examine historical food safety recalls involving Lidl Deluxe cheese, Old Irish Creamery products and Mrs Kirkham's Lancashire cheese, including what the official investigations actually found.
But not everything in the cheese aisle deserves criticism.
We finish with 4 alternatives worth considering: Tesco Mature Cheddar, genuine PDO Feta, PDO Halloumi and Parmigiano Reggiano.
The biggest lesson? The most important information isn't always on the front of the packet.
