Jesus goes back to his hometown Nazareth, stands up in the synagogue, and reads from Isaiah about the Spirit of the Lord being on him. At first the crowd is amazed - until someone whispers, 'isn't this just Joseph's son?' That one line turns the whole room cold, and within minutes the same people who were marveling at his words are dragging him to a cliff to throw him off. Bishop Dag Heward-Mills uses this story to make a hard point: the people who know you best can be the hardest ones to reach, because familiarity breeds contempt. Jesus escapes the mob, but even then, in his own hometown, he could not do the miracles he did everywhere else.
