Do You Remember Sonic the Hedgehog Spinball for the Sega Genesis?
In 1993, Sega needed another Sonic game on store shelves while Sonic 3 was still in development. The result was one of the strangest detours in the series: a game that took Sonic’s ability to curl into a ball and turned it into the foundation for an enormous pinball adventure.
In this episode of Do You Remember?, we revisit Sonic the Hedgehog Spinball, from its rushed development at Sega Technical Institute to the four giant tables that carried Sonic through Toxic Caves, Lava Powerhouse, The Machine, and Showdown.
We’ll explore how the game blended platforming with pinball physics, why collecting Chaos Emeralds became the key to progression, how its darker industrial art style set it apart from earlier Sonic games, and how the soundtrack had to be altered at the last minute after Sega discovered it could not freely reuse the familiar Sonic theme.
Was the strange mix of pinball and platforming what made Sonic Spinball memorable, or was it the brutal difficulty and unpredictable physics? And which stage gave you the most trouble?
