Tapan Sahariah is a multifaceted cultural and literary personality from Assam, actively involved in mime, theatre, literature, music and public life. Through his creative and social engagement, he has established a distinctive identity in the cultural landscape of Assam.
A major feature of his creative journey is his effort to portray folk traditions, social realities, human emotions and contemporary life through mime, theatre, poetry, stories and songs. His work reflects a deep connection with Assamese society, culture and everyday human experiences.
Cultural and Theatrical Contribution
Mime has been one of the most significant areas of Tapan Sahariah’s artistic career. He has written, directed and performed mime productions dealing with social, cultural and human themes. His notable original mime productions include “Burhi Aair Xadhu,” “Bakora Mati-Tokola Pahar,” “Swachh Bharat Abhiyan” and “Naughty Krishna,” among others.
He has also performed in various theatrical productions, including works inspired by the internationally acclaimed plays of William Shakespeare, such as Hamlet and Othello. His other notable theatrical performances include Bedabyas, Abhishapta Phulxajya, Suren Churor Putek, Kim Aham and Karna Complex.
His artistic activities have taken him beyond Assam to cultural platforms in Kolkata, Delhi, Odisha, Mizoram, Sikkim and several other parts of India, where he has presented mime and participated in different cultural programmes.
Government Recognition and Fellowship
One of the significant recognitions of Tapan Sahariah’s contribution to mime and theatre is the Junior Fellowship of the Ministry of Culture, Government of India.
He was included in the official Junior Fellowship list for 2015–16 under Field: Theatre | Sub-field: Mime | State: Assam, with Fellowship ID: JF20160373.
His fellowship research topic was:
“Tradition of Folk-Culture on North-West Assam and Its Application on Mime.”
The research reflects his sustained interest in Assamese folk culture and his endeavour to explore how traditional cultural elements can be creatively adapted to the medium of mime.
Training and Contribution as a Subject Expert
Tapan Sahariah has also contributed to the development of mime and movement through training and capacity-building programmes. Since 2009, he has been associated with the Centre for Cultural Resources and Training (CCRT), Regional Centre, as a subject expert in programmes related to Mime and Movement.
From 23 to 25 November 2020, he served as a Subject Expert and provided training in the Mime and Movement programme organised by the CCRT Regional Centre at Assam Shishu Kalyan Sadan, Jalukbari.
Literary Contribution
Alongside his work in mime and theatre, Tapan Sahariah is actively engaged in Assamese literature as a poet, short story writer and novelist.
His literary works explore themes such as love, life, human emotions, relationships, dreams, pain, social realities and contemporary society. His notable poems include “Deutar Xopon Hatutir Kobot,” “Beka Lora,” “Tumi Nahileo,” “Prithibir Oxukh” and “Tumi Tumi…”.
His poem “Deutar Xopon Hatutir Kobot” was published in an Assamese newspaper.
As a short story writer, “Loralite Dhemalite” is among his notable works, and the same title is also significant in his work as a novelist.

Tapan Sahariah is also active in public and organisational life. He has served as the President of Patharughat Mandal BJP and has been involved in grassroots political and organisational activities.
