In 1453, one of the most legendary cities in history fell.
For centuries, Constantinople stood behind massive walls that were considered nearly impossible to conquer. But in 1453, the 21-year-old Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II launched a campaign that would change the course of world history.
From massive siege cannons and naval warfare to the extraordinary strategy of transporting ships over land, Mehmed II combined military technology, planning, geography and patience to break the defenses of Constantinople.
On 29 May 1453, the Byzantine Empire came to an end, and a new era of Ottoman power began.
But the story did not end with the fall of the city. Constantinople became the center of the Ottoman Empire, while Byzantine scholars carried Greek manuscripts and classical knowledge toward Europe, contributing to a wider movement of intellectual exchange.
This documentary explores the strategy, technology, politics, geography and historical consequences behind one of the most important events of the medieval world.
