Every Friday for eight months, Robert bought Vanessa white tulips. He never missed one, not even in the pouring rain. He drove her around, picked up her dry cleaning, put new tires on her car, and carried her sister’s couch up four flights of stairs. He never asked for applause.
But Vanessa had been scrolling. Her friend’s boyfriend took her to Paris, and suddenly everything Robert did looked small. “That’s the bare minimum,” she said. “Any boyfriend would do that.”
Robert asked one question: “Name one.”
When Vanessa demanded a break so he could “think about how to be better,” Robert didn’t beg or argue. He picked up the tulips she no longer wanted and walked them back to the one person who had noticed every single Friday: Grace, the florist.
Two weeks later, Vanessa walks past the flower shop and sees Robert carrying buckets, holding a coffee someone bought him, and hearing two words he hadn’t heard in a long time: thank you.
This story is about effort and who deserves it. Consistency is rare. A man who shows up every week without being asked is not the bare minimum. The right person will see it the first time.
