There is a command in the Sermon on the Mount that most people quietly assume is impossible to obey. Do not worry. Jesus says it three times in a single passage. And if you have ever tried to follow that instruction at two in the morning, staring at a ceiling, you know the problem. You cannot command a feeling to leave.
So one of two things is true. Either Jesus was asking for something no human being can do — or he was talking about something different from what we think.
Here is the claim this study is going to test: Jesus does not treat worry as a feeling problem. He treats it as a trust problem. If that is right, the passage stops sounding like impossible advice and starts sounding like a diagnosis.
We'll look at:
Why the first word of Matthew 6:25 is "therefore" — and what Jesus was actually concluding from
What the Greek word merimnaō actually means — and why it looks nothing like our word "worry"
Why mammon may come from a root meaning "what you lean your weight on"
What oligopistos ("little faith") tells us — and why Jesus uses it for storms, sinking, and forgotten lunches
How Exodus 16's manna was designed to make hoarding impossible — and what that teaches about anxiety
Why Jesus tells his disciples to pray for daily bread, not monthly security
What the rich fool, Martha, and the ravens all have in common
Why worry and mammon grow in the same soil in the parable of the sower
How Paul in Philippians and Peter in his letter pick up the same thread
Why the cure for worry in Jesus's teaching is not a better plan — it is a relationship
The command is not emotional regulation. Jesus is not talking to the feeling. He is talking to the belief underneath it — and the belief is always some version of the same sentence: if I do not hold this together, no one will.
Worry is not really about tomorrow. It is about whether you believe someone is already there.
