The autumn moon rises over the eastern hills, and in a Heian-kyō garden the lattice shutters are raised so the court can watch its reflection in the pond.
In 794 the imperial court moved to Heian-kyō, today's Kyoto, and for nearly four centuries it nurtured one of the most refined aristocratic cultures in history. Around the year 1000, the age of Murasaki Shikibu and Sei Shōnagon, courtiers gathered on the fifteenth night of the eighth month to admire the full autumn moon, composing poetry and playing music, sometimes from boats on their garden ponds, admiring the moon's reflection in the water. Court music of the era, gagaku, used instruments such as the shō mouth organ, the ryūteki flute, the biwa lute, and the koto zither, and the literature of the age, such as The Tale of Genji, shows nobles also playing for themselves in private. How that private music actually sounded is largely lost; this hour imagines one moon-viewing night, from dusk to the stillest hour before dawn.
🎧 About the music
These are imagined, historically inspired pieces, not reconstructions. They were selected, edited, and sequenced by The Sounding Past. Instruments evoked: koto, shō, ryūteki, gaku-biwa, wagon, hichiriki.
