Sinead and David’s wedding at Kehillath Israel in Brookline brought together Jewish tradition, family, international guests and one seriously energetic celebration. The day began close to home for both of them, with Sinead and David getting ready separately in Brookline before meeting at the synagogue. They had planned for a relaxed, documentary approach to the photography, and the day naturally offered plenty of opportunities for that.
A First Look on the Steps Before the ceremony, Sinead and David met outside Kehillath Israel for their first look. The large stone entrance and carved wooden doors made a great backdrop, but the strongest part of the sequence is simply their reaction to seeing each other. There are photographs of David waiting alone, Sinead approaching from behind, and the two of them laughing together once they finally met. From there, they walked through the surrounding Brookline streets for a few portraits. Sinead’s long veil caught the breeze as they crossed the street, giving the photographs a completely different feeling from the more formal images at the synagogue entrance. The neighborhood itself became part of the photographs, with tree-lined streets, brick homes and the early signs of fall around them.
The Ketubah Signing Before the larger ceremony began, Sinead and David gathered for the Ketubah signing. It was a much more intimate part of the day, with family and close friends gathered nearby as the document was signed. The photographs show plenty of interaction happening around them, from conversations and greetings to some wonderful reactions as everyone came together. That smaller gathering also gave us the opportunity to concentrate on candid moments rather than formal photographs, which fit perfectly with the kind of coverage Sinead and David had requested.
A Jewish Ceremony Filled With Family The ceremony took place inside the synagogue beneath a beautifully decorated chuppah. One particularly meaningful detail was that David’s four adult children helped hold the chuppah during the ceremony. The photographs show Sinead and David surrounded not only by the traditional elements of the ceremony but by their family as well. The synagogue itself gave the ceremony photographs a strong sense of place. Wide photographs show the long aisle, high ceiling and symmetry of the sanctuary, while the closer images concentrate on the expressions between Sinead, David and the people around them.
A Celebration That Quickly Took Off Once the ceremony was over, the mood changed very quickly. Guests had traveled from Ireland and other places internationally to celebrate with Sinead and David, and the reception had the feeling of a real gathering of families and friends who had come a long way to be together. The dance floor photographs tell that story better than anything else. Sinead and David were right in the middle of the action, surrounded by guests dancing in circles, laughing, clapping and pulling one another onto the floor. At one point Sinead was lifted into the air during the dancing, while other photographs show David being pulled into the middle of the celebration. There is a wonderful mix of traditional Jewish dancing, spontaneous moments and guests completely caught up in the music. One of the most memorable visual surprises of the night came when two enormous inflatable green figures made their way onto the dance floor. It is exactly the kind of unexpected moment that turns into a photograph people remember years later. The celebration continued with a live band, dinner, speeches and plenty more dancing. Some of the quieter reception photographs are just as meaningful, showing Sinead and David reacting to speeches, laughing with family and sharing moments together at their table. And before the night was over, everyone came together for one huge group photograph. With Sinead and David surrounded by virtually the entire room, it became a fitting final image for a wedding centered so strongly around family, friends and community. Sinead and David’s wedding was a wonderful mix of tradition and personality, from their quiet first look on the synagogue steps to a dance floor that seemed to get more energetic as the night went on. Congratulations to Sinead and David, and thank you for having Metzger Studios document such a memorable wedding day at Kehillath Israel.
