BRUTAL DRAW! Alex Eala STRIPPED Of Her Bye As Fernandez AND Pegula Block Her Path In Wuhan

Alex Eala just received the toughest draw of her career at the 2026 Wuhan Open, with Leylah Fernandez and Jessica Pegula standing between her and a deep run. But the story everyone is telling about this draw is backwards. Twelve months ago, Eala lost in the first round of Wuhan qualifying. This week she returned as the number 13 seed, a top 20 player, a WTA champion, and the only tennis player named to TIME's 2026 list of rising stars with a tribute written by Rafael Nadal himself. Then the draw came out. No first round bye. A qualifier first. Fernandez or Alexandrova in round two. Jessica Pegula, the world number 3, in round three. No rest day, after 17 days without a competitive match. Four of the world's top 17 withdrew from this event, including defending champion Coco Gauff and world number 1 Elena Rybakina. So why did Eala end up with the hardest road in the draw? In this video we break down what actually happened, why John McEnroe called her serve the liability, what 9 service breaks at the US Open really mean, and the one detail buried in the Wuhan draw structure that changes the entire story.
