A sunset drive through Botswana, from Kazungula to Nata on the A33. Golden light, long grass glowing orange, and the open road. The drive begins at 14:30 and ends around 18:00, when the light fades and the camera can no longer see the road. This is one of the main cargo routes between South Africa and countries further north. At the start, I pass a line of trucks nearly 5km long, parked and waiting to cross the border into Zambia. Along the way: passing vehicles switch on their headlights, the horizon glows with the afterglow of the setting sun behind me, and near the end I stop at a veterinary checkpoint to dip my shoes and ride the tyres through a chemical dip—a regular feature of driving in Botswana, part of the country's control of cattle diseases like foot and mouth.
