O negative blood is one of the rarest major blood types, but could its distribution also reveal something about ancient human populations? This video explores the genetic history of O negative blood, focusing on Britain, Wales, Cornwall, northern England, and the ancient populations that lived across Atlantic Europe thousands of years ago. The script examines the proposed connection between elevated Rh-negative frequencies and deep Mesolithic ancestry, while exploring what ancient DNA can reveal about population continuity and migration.
The story then moves through some of the biggest population changes in British history, including Neolithic migration, later European settlement, and the Black Death. The video examines research involving ancient DNA from plague victims and survivors, including findings involving the immune-related gene ERAP2, and considers how disease outbreaks may have influenced genetic variation in surviving populations. It also explores the proposed genetic parallels between parts of Britain and the Basque region of Europe.
But the biggest question is where O negative blood really came from—and whether blood type alone can reveal an ancient family origin. Could an O negative bloodline preserve a genetic connection to populations that lived in Britain thousands of years before Rome, the Vikings, or the Anglo-Saxons? In this video, we follow the DNA trail from Mesolithic Britain to modern populations and examine the evidence, theories, and unanswered questions surrounding one of the world's most mysterious blood types.
