The Love You Want

You don’t get the love you want; you get the love you deserve. And the love you deserve is the love you give yourself. These were the words my therapist shared with me during one of our sessions, and I’ve never looked at love the same way since. The truth is, although you're never responsible for someone else's inability to love you well, you get to set the tone and standard for the love you want in your life. Whether it’s platonic or romantic, the way you love yourself influences what you accept, what you tolerate, and what you believe you deserve. When you learn to love yourself well, you begin to recognize the difference between the love you desire and the love that actually serves you. You stop settling for less than you need, not because you expect perfection from others, but because you understand that your needs, feelings, and well-being matter, too. Sister, it’s time to take the reins of your life. It’s time to be intentional about how you treat yourself, how you speak to yourself, and how you allow others to show up in your life.
