Today, we’re walking through Oslo, discovering quiet neighborhoods, harbor views, and everyday city life. Oslo, the capital of Norway, sits at the northern end of the Oslofjord and serves as the country's political and economic center. The city was founded around 1040 and became an important regional hub for trade, administration, and maritime activity in Scandinavia. In 1624 a large fire destroyed much of the medieval city, and King Christian IV ordered Oslo to be rebuilt closer to the fortress area. The city was renamed Christiania and developed with wider streets, fortified structures, and growing commercial activity. During the 1800s industrialization transformed Christiania into a modern Nordic city. Railways, shipping industries, and manufacturing expanded, and by 1900 the population had grown rapidly as people moved from rural Norway to the capital for work. In 1925 the city officially returned to the historic name Oslo. Throughout the 20th century it developed strong welfare institutions, urban planning, and public transportation systems that connected expanding residential districts with the central city. Today the Oslo metropolitan area has more than 1.5 million residents and functions as Norway's financial and governmental center. Energy companies, maritime industries, and technology sectors contribute strongly to the national economy. Oslo balances urban growth with nature, as forests and fjord landscapes remain close to the city center.
