Cooktown is growing its own health workforce. Local health workers, community leaders and services in Cape York explain how a remote town builds health careers, keeps people in community, and looks after the workers who carry the load. Filmed in Cooktown, Far North Queensland, on Cape York. What is OneNQ? OneNQ is a workforce development initiative supporting the skills, connections and wellbeing of people working across regional, rural and remote northern Queensland. It is a program of Northern Queensland Primary Health Network (NQPHN), delivered with lead providers CheckUP and Health Workforce Queensland. OneNQ is open to health and community professionals, support staff, students and organisations, and offers online learning, workshops and forums, wellbeing support, regional career opportunities and a bursary program. https://nqphn.com.au/events-education... Why is workforce wellbeing part of this? In small and remote communities, the people delivering care are often responding to distress involving their own friends, family and neighbours. Supporting their mental health is part of keeping a workforce in place, which is why wellbeing sits alongside learning, connection and opportunity in how OneNQ works. What is CORES training? CORES (Community Owned Response to Eliminating Suicide) is a community owned, community delivered suicide intervention training program. CORES Queensland delivered a free full-day workshop in Cooktown alongside the OneNQ community event, open to community members, workers and volunteers. It builds skills to recognise when someone may be at risk, start a direct and caring conversation, connect them with support, and look after yourself while doing it. https://cores.org.au/ Chapters 0:00 Coming home to Cooktown 0:41 What OneNQ is 1:32 Why people leave, and what’s changing 2:05 Students, training and local pathways 3:01 How it works on the ground 3:48 Belonging Support Lifeline 13 11 14 13YARN 13 92 76 (crisis support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people) Beyond Blue 1300 22 4636 Emergency 000 About CheckUP CheckUP is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to better health for people and communities who need it most, working with partner organisations and health providers across more than 170 communities in Queensland. https://checkup.org.au/ Acknowledgement of Country CheckUP acknowledges the Traditional Custodians past and present on whose land we walk, we work and we live.
