------
Eighteen months since I last sparred. A year since I tore my ACL. Today I stepped back on the mats at Soma Fight Club in Bali — one of the most well-known fight gyms on the island — and got in for a full sparring session.
I nearly didn't go.
I'd trained twice the day before, I was sore, I'd just had a massage an hour before and I genuinely thought about skipping it. Sat there talking myself out of it. Then I went anyway.
In this one:
— Open gym session upstairs — mobility, stretching, calisthenics
— A look around Soma, the mats and the strength and conditioning room
— 5pm sparring session, first one in about 18 months
— How the cardio hit me (way harder than I expected at my size)
— Training around a knee that still isn't fixed a year on
The honest bit: it was nowhere near as easy as I thought. The cardio especially. But I held my own for someone a year out with a dodgy knee, and there's real talent training there.
And here's what I actually took from it — I almost quit before I even started. That's the whole lesson. Every time you make the uncomfortable thing comfortable, you get a bit freer. I nearly missed that session and I'd have missed everything that came with it.
Going to be wrecked tomorrow. Worth it.
More fight club sessions coming since you've been asking for them.

⚠️ Training on a torn ACL is my own call, not advice. If you've got an injury, speak to an actual doctor about your situation.
