One city, two continents, and a different perspective from the water. Join us for a Bosphorus boat tour past waterfront palaces, mosques, neighbourhoods, and the bridges connecting Europe and Asia.
Our first day in Istanbul began early. On Friday, October 9, 2026, we arrived after an overnight drive from Bulgaria, left the car at our hotel, and headed out for a short walk before breakfast. It was around eight in the morning. Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, and the gardens of Sultanahmet welcomed us with warm light, quiet paths, and a cat already enjoying the sunshine.
A few hours later, the city felt completely different. Trams passed through the streets, vendors sold roasted chestnuts and corn, and long queues stretched in both directions outside the Basilica Cistern. This film shows the surrounding streets and the entrance; it does not include footage inside the cistern.
Amid the bustle, we chose a boat tour with Grand Boat Line. The young man who introduced the route to our group made a very good impression with his clear, helpful explanations. Soon afterwards, we were aboard and watching the shoreline slip away.
🌊 ISTANBUL FROM THE WATER
Our first views take in the historic peninsula. The Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia rise above the old waterfront walls, followed by Ahırkapı Lighthouse, Topkapı Palace, and the greenery of Sarayburnu. From the water, the buildings we had just seen up close become part of one sweeping skyline.
We pass Sepetçiler Pavilion and look towards Eminönü, the New Mosque, Süleymaniye Mosque, and Galata Bridge. Across the water, Karaköy comes into view, with Galata Tower above the rooftops, The Peninsula Istanbul, and the Galataport waterfront.
The scenery keeps changing along the European shore. We see Dolmabahçe Mosque, the clock tower, and Beşiktaş Stadium behind them, before the long waterfront façade of Dolmabahçe Palace unfolds beside us.
We continue past Four Seasons, the historic Çırağan Palace, and its neighbouring hotel complex. Next come the historic maritime school with its ship’s mast, the Feriye Palace buildings, and one of the most recognisable views along the route: Ortaköy Mosque standing at the water’s edge, with the Bosphorus Bridge behind it.
Further along, we pass Kuruçeşme and Galatasaray Island. Green hillsides, waterfront homes, and boats lead us towards Rumeli Hisarı Fortress and the second bridge, Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge.
🏡 ALONG THE ASIAN SHORE
The journey continues with views of waterfront mansions, known as yalı, gardens, and neighbourhoods along the Asian side of the Bosphorus. Seagulls fly around our boat as new details appear between the buildings.
Highlights include the historic Kuleli Military High School with its two pointed towers, the Çengelköy waterfront, and Çamlıca Tower on the distant skyline. Beylerbeyi Palace then comes into view beside the Asian end of the Bosphorus Bridge.
Towards the end, we reach views of Üsküdar and its piers. We save the final moments for Maiden’s Tower — Kız Kulesi. Historic Istanbul stretches out behind it, while the water, passing boats, and birds complete the scene.
This is our memory of that first day: a morning walk with Krasi, Pavkata, and Daniela, lively streets, and then time on the water, watching Istanbul reveal itself from a different angle.
