A boy hides in a river with a wooden collar around his neck while the men holding him search the bank. Before Temujin can rule the steppe, he has to survive it.
This is the reported escape that opens a childhood the sources never fully settled. Temujin is born into a leading family, then his father Yesugei is reportedly poisoned by Tatars, and the protection dies with him. Followers who owe everything to Yesugei abandon his widow Hoelun and her children instead of supporting a boy. The family carries a noble name and still goes hungry while Hoelun gathers wild food along the water and the boys hunt and fish.
The household then tears itself apart, and a leading family with no leader is easy to take. The Tayichiut seize Temujin and hold him, and he reportedly escapes his guard into the Onon River, where the restraint helps him stay afloat. A man named Sorgan Shira finds him and does not give him away.
Around 1178, in the conventional chronology, Temujin marries Borte and carries a valuable sable garment to Toghril, a powerful ruler with an old sworn bond to his father. He is not offering tribute. He is buying a place inside a stronger man's protection, and it works. When Merkit raiders carry Borte away, he turns to Toghril and to Jamukha, his sworn brother, and their forces bring her back. By the 1180s, Temujin is collecting followers of his own, and the camp that rescued his wife can no longer hold both him and Jamukha.
Temujin survives his childhood because other people choose him. His next problem is what happens when two of those people want the same future.
