As we continue our journey down the inside passage on the Northern Dream Alaska small-ship cruise, today we visited and docked overnight at Port Protection. Once again, we were incredibly lucky to experience exceptionally nice weather and thoroughly enjoyed our time there and meeting the locals!
Nestled in a quiet cove on the northwest edge of Prince of Wales Island, Port Protection is a tiny, off-grid enclave in Southeast Alaska where fewer than 40 year-round residents live entirely at the whim of the wilderness. Accessible only by boat or floatplane, this roadless community operates without municipal government, law enforcement, or local doctors, relying instead on a network of wooden boardwalks, self-reliance, and a deep-seated tradition of mutual aid. Originally established as a salmon-trolling stop in the early 20th century, Port Protection gained iconic status for its fierce independence—historically leading grassroots legal battles to preserve surrounding Tongass rainforests and salmon streams, and later captivating audiences as the rugged setting for National Geographic’s hit series Life Below Zero: Port Protection.
