Australia's west coast runs for more than 12,000 km — over a third of the mainland coastline. Yet at night, from space, there is one bright light (Perth) and then thousands of kilometres of darkness. Why? In this video we look at the map to understand why the west side of a rich, developed country is so empty — a story about wind, rock, water, and a few very bad first impressions. We cover: • The global desert belt — and why west coasts around 30° are dry • Trade winds that drop their rain on the east coast • The warm Leeuwin Current and Ningaloo Reef • Some of the oldest, most nutrient-poor land on Earth • Cyclones, record heat and giant tides in the north • The Dutch sailors who saw this coast first — and sailed on • The gold rush that needed a 566 km water pipeline • The iron-ore boom that runs on fly-in, fly-out workers • Why Perth is the one big exception Chapters 0:00 An empty coastline 0:49 The numbers 1:51 The desert latitude 2:59 Wrong wind, no mountains 4:40 Ancient, worn-out land 5:51 Extremes in the north 7:01 Bad first impressions 8:35 Gold and a 566 km pipe 9:57 Rich, but empty 11:03 Perth: the exception 12:07 Geography is fate Sources & notes • Population: Australian Bureau of Statistics, Regional Population 2023–24; Centre for Population, 2025 Population Statement (WA ≈ 2.98 million, Greater Perth ≈ 2.38 million). • Pilbara & Kimberley: WA Country Health Service regional profiles 2023 (region outlines on the maps are approximate). • Coastline length: Geoscience Australia (WA mainland coastline ≈ 12,889 km). • Climate & cyclones: Bureau of Meteorology (Cyclone Vance 1999, 267 km/h gust at Learmonth; Marble Bar 1923–24 heat record; south-west rainfall decline since the 1970s). • Goldfields Water Supply Scheme (opened 1903, ≈566 km): Government of Western Australia / Water Corporation. • Desalination share of Perth's drinking water: Water Corporation; Economic Regulation Authority WA. • Iron ore production: USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries. • Murujuga Cultural Landscape: UNESCO World Heritage List (2025).
