On April 1st, 1973, housewives all over America stopped buying meat for a week, and a little blue-and-white box that cost about a dime turned into supper for under five dollars. Pour yourself a cup of coffee and come back to those 1970s kitchens with me. We'll make twenty-five suppers from one box of mix, from cornbread franks with maple syrup to a prize-winning skillet whose judges weren't sitting in anybody's kitchen. Every dish has a small job the grandkids can do, and one easy rule about batter that makes all twenty-five make sense.
