Pete Wild: How Oldham Athletic Shaped My Career & What Comes Next...

Pete Wild sits down with Gab Sutton for a detailed conversation about his journey through football management, from his roots as an Oldham Athletic supporter to becoming a Football League manager. Wild explains how he worked his way through the Oldham academy before unexpectedly being handed the first team job, taking charge after Paul Scholes' departure and dealing with an extraordinary period at his boyhood club. He also reflects on the lessons he took from watching different managers and why those experiences helped shape the manager he became. The conversation then moves through his spells at Halifax Town and Barrow, including building competitive teams on limited budgets, developing football and financial assets and his belief that clubs need time to build properly rather than constantly changing managers. Wild explains his three year cycle of crisis management, development and implementation, as well as the importance of building genuine connections between clubs, players and supporters. Wild also opens up about Fleetwood Town, explaining why he believes the job was not what had been promised to him and why he knew within a week that he had made a mistake. He then discusses his spell at Tranmere Rovers, taking over during a relegation battle and attempting to keep the club in the Football League. Finally, Pete reflects on what he has learned from the adversity of his most recent jobs, the coaches and players who have influenced him and what he now wants from his next managerial opportunity. He explains why alignment between a manager and the football club will be central to his next decision and why he believes he is returning to the job market as a better manager. 00:00 Life Out Of Work 01:47 Oldham Athletic 03:05 Getting Into Football 04:17 Oldham Academy 06:09 Getting The Oldham Job 07:24 Lessons From Oldham 08:06 Management & Fans 10:09 The Three Year Cycle 13:08 Pete Wild's Celebrations 15:16 Media & Honesty 17:10 The Oldham Experience 20:52 Halifax Town 24:44 Moving To Barrow 26:05 Building Barrow 31:39 Leaving Barrow 34:12 The Fleetwood Job 35:05 "I Knew I'd Made A Mistake" 39:29 Leaving Fleetwood 40:23 Tranmere Rovers 45:30 Leaving Tranmere 47:19 Learning From Adversity 49:21 Best Players Managed 51:04 Adam Temple 54:09 What's Next? 56:07 Recruitment 57:28 Final Thoughts #OAFC #OldhamAthletic #TranmereRovers #Barrow #Halifax _ Gab Sutton's EFL Debate is your trusted home for everything across the English Football League.
