Headcode: 2F51
Service: Guildford – London Waterloo
Journey: Clapham Junction – London Waterloo
Date: 27/09/2026
Today’s video features a journey aboard South Western Railway Class 701043, travelling from Clapham Junction to London Waterloo on service 2F51 from Guildford to London Waterloo. 🚆🎥
This is the return journey following my earlier Class 450 journey from London Waterloo to Clapham Junction, but this time we’re travelling aboard one of South Western Railway’s much newer Class 701 Arterio trains.
The video begins at Clapham Junction, where 701043 arrives a few minutes late. After boarding, we depart at 17:49, around four minutes behind schedule, and head towards Central London.
The first and only intermediate stop during my section of the journey is Vauxhall. This part of the South Western Main Line is incredibly busy, with numerous tracks carrying SWR suburban and longer-distance services in and out of Waterloo, so there’s usually another train somewhere alongside us.
And at 5:12, another train decides it wants to be in the video too. 😂📢 A Class 350 passes and unexpectedly gives us a horn, which certainly wasn’t something I was expecting while standing at Vauxhall! A nice little bonus for the video. 🚆😂
After leaving Vauxhall, 701043 continues across the final section into London Waterloo, passing through the huge network of tracks and junctions on the approach to the terminus. We eventually arrive at 17:58, around three minutes behind the scheduled arrival time of 17:55.
The Class 701 Arterio is South Western Railway’s new-generation suburban fleet, built by Alstom as part of the Aventra family. They’re a massive contrast to some of the older trains associated with Waterloo’s suburban network, with wide gangways, modern passenger information displays, air conditioning and a much more open interior.
And then there’s London Waterloo itself. 🚉 Waterloo has 24 National Rail platforms, making it Britain’s largest station by number of National Rail platforms. It’s one of London’s major railway termini and the centre of SWR’s network, with trains spreading out across southwest London and towards destinations across Surrey, Hampshire, Dorset and beyond.
