Ata Ratu at Europalia

Ata Ratu is the queen of jungga, a lute played in East Sumba, Indonesia. The odd rhythms of her jungga picking anchor her incredible voice, with improvised lyrics in the local Kambera language about life, love, and even the audience. Ata Ratu is renowned across her corner of Sumba, with folks coming from hours away to request bespoke songs about their hardships. Ata Ratu is making her international debut at the Europalia International Arts Festival in Belgium next week! Together with sape' maestro Thambunesia from Kalimantan and batti-batti trio Turikale from Sulawesi, Ata Ratu will be playing three shows across the country: 01/12 - Brussels, 02/12 - Bruges, 03/12 - Gent.
