Yamaha vs Fender - The Brutal Truth Guitar Snobs Won't Like
Guitar shops have called Yamaha the sensible starter brand for decades, while Fender is the one you graduate to. This video looks at what each company actually builds, owns and sells. We trace Yamaha from the 1966 FG-180 Red Label to the Santana-designed SG2000 with its brass sustain block, and the Pacifica, born in a North Hollywood design office in 1990 to take on Fender's budget models. Then we put today's Japan-made Pacifica Professional, with Reflectone pickups co-developed with Rupert Neve Designs and Initial Response Acceleration, next to the American Professional II Stratocaster.
Along the way: Yamaha's A.R.E. wood-aging process born from violin research, the factories Yamaha owns versus Fender's contract-built tiers, and how Yamaha ended up owning Guild, Line 6 and Ampeg. We also cover Fender's Servco ownership and 2025 Moody's downgrade, a CEO whose first electric guitar was made in Japan, and the 2026 Stratocaster body-shape letter Fender sent to Yamaha.
If you've ever wondered whether you're paying for the guitar or the logo, this one's for you.
