Friends Residence is a contemporary residential project designed as a private home for two friends and colleagues. Located in a densely built residential neighborhood at the end of a cul-de-sac, the project occupies a 500-square-meter site with an approximate built area of 950 square meters.
The project was developed in 2018 with the intention of creating two independent homes for the two clients. The building consists of a basement, ground floor, and two upper residential floors, carefully organized to provide privacy, natural light, fresh air, and a strong connection with the outdoors.
The basement accommodates shared facilities, mechanical and building services, and private storage areas. The ground floor includes the main entrance, lobby, and a two-bedroom residence jointly owned by the two clients. The first and second floors each contain an independent three-bedroom residence, with en-suite bedrooms, a kitchen, living spaces, and terraces oriented toward different sides of the building.
Because the site is surrounded by neighboring properties on three sides, a portion of the northern side was transformed into an open-to-sky courtyard. Together with the southern courtyard, this space becomes an important part of the architectural concept, bringing natural light and fresh air into the adjacent spaces while creating a visual and sensory connection with nature.
The design of the courtyards combines water, greenery, and the existing trees on the site to create a more natural and livable residential environment. Rather than treating landscape as a separate element, the project integrates nature directly into the architecture, allowing water, vegetation, light, and space to become part of everyday life.
The minimalist façade is primarily finished in honed white travertine, complemented by carefully selected elements of metal and glass. This restrained material palette gives the building a distinctly modern and timeless character, reflecting a contemporary approach to travertine architecture.
Water plays a particularly important role in the architectural expression of Friends Residence. A cascading water feature is integrated into the façade at the first-floor level, accompanied by two additional water features positioned at lower levels. When activated, the sound of flowing water extends through the courtyards and surrounding spaces, creating a continuous sensory connection between the residents, the building, and nature.
Friends Residence explores how modern residential architecture can respond to a dense urban context while maintaining a sense of privacy, openness, and connection to the natural environment.
