For decades, Mazda and the rotary engine were almost inseparable. From Felix Wankel's revolutionary idea to Mazda's legendary RX-7 and the 787B that won Le Mans in 1991, the rotary engine became one of the most unusual chapters in automotive history. But the rotary wasn't perfect. Mazda spent years solving its biggest problems, nearly went bankrupt during the 1970s oil crisis, and eventually turned the rotary into a dedicated sports-car engine. The RX-7 became a global icon, while the RX-8 represented Mazda's final attempt to keep the rotary alive as a mainstream powerplant. Then, in 2012, production stopped. But the story didn't end there. Mazda eventually brought the rotary back as a range extender in the MX-30 R-EV — and continues to explore whether the rotary can survive in a world of increasingly strict emissions regulations. This is the story of Mazda's rotary engine: its incredible engineering, its greatest victories, its biggest failures, and the reasons it nearly disappeared. Which rotary Mazda would you choose: the Cosmo Sport, RX-7 FD, or RX-8? Let us know in the comments. #Mazda #RotaryEngine #RX7 #RX8 #Mazda787B #Wankel #JDM #LeMans #CarHistory #AutomotiveHistory
