Ryde Bulk Recycling Run

In this video we check out one of the rear loaders that works in the City of Ryde collection contract today, commencing work 3 years ago in 2015. SUEZ (formerly SITA) was the company looking after the prior contract and managed to seal the deal with Ryde for another full term, seeing them roll out a new batch of trucks. Beside a set of fresh Superior Pak Iveco side loaders, there were also four Bucher Dennis rear loaders to look after the manual handling side of Ryde. 1 of 4 is dedicated to booked clean-up, the second and third allocated to small-medium density units garbage and recycling, with the fourth and featured truck assigned to bulk bins. Every Tuesday this bulk bins truck handles a mixed recycling run, consisting of visits to larger residential properties and a number of commercial customers using council waste services. Instead of catching one of the new rear loaders on clean-up or general waste, I thought this particular recycling run would be cooler. In November 2017 I set out early one Tuesday, met up with the truck’s crew at the first job for the morning in West Ryde and followed along for a few hours to a number of different locations. After all that time and effort I ended up with this 11min video of the truck moving along the roads, running a heap of pack cycles and emptying a variety of 240L, 660L and 1100L bins full of streamed and commingled recyclables. This run spans pretty much the whole area of Ryde and reaches each border - south to the high density living in Meadowbank, north to the residential developments in Macquarie Park and east to the shops of Gladesville. In the old contract the entire run used to be covered in a single load, but now it’s a double load shift due to all the residential growth and construction of large unit blocks. Also worth noting is the champion young bloke driving this truck, being Alex, or AussieGarbo67 as he’s known on YouTube. A little while ago he earned his truck licence and got on with SUEZ to live the long awaited dream of working in his home contract, starting on the rear loaders, now also a side arm operator.
