Learn how to set up a 2D Contour toolpath in Mastercam from scratch, and why your first contour leaves material behind. We draw a simple part, set up the stock, then use Multi Passes and Depth Cuts so the tool clears all the stock in X, Y and Z, finishing with light finish passes. Chapters: 0:00 Intro 0:11 Draw the wireframe: 4 x 2 inch rectangle 0:35 Round the corners with Fillet (R0.5) 1:08 Extrude the solid (0.75 inch thick) 1:57 Organize wireframe and solids with Levels 2:48 Add the machine group (default mill) 3:05 Set the stock material: 6061 aluminum 3:20 Stock setup: bounding box plus 0.75 inch in X and Y 4:03 Tool settings 4:26 Create the Contour toolpath (chain the outer wireframe) 4:49 Pick a 1/4 inch flat end mill from the tool library 5:08 Linking parameters: clearance, retract, feed plane, top of stock 6:08 Set the depth from the part and add break through 7:00 Turn on coolant 7:11 Backplot and Verify: material left behind 8:26 Multi Passes to clear the X/Y stock (6, then 12 passes) 10:00 Isometric check: material left in Z 10:59 Depth Cuts to step down in Z 12:06 Compare the result to the part 12:31 Recap 13:24 Add finish passes for X/Y and Z 14:30 Wrap-up Key takeaway: by default Mastercam only cuts the final contour. If your stock is wider than the tool diameter or thicker than the tool can cut in one go, use Multi Passes (X/Y) and Depth Cuts (Z).
