The Desire of Ages Chapter 46, “He Was Transfigured,” by Ellen G. White follows Jesus as He leads Peter, James, and John up a mountain to pray. Burdened by the suffering and death soon before Him, Christ seeks strength from His Father and prays that His disciples’ faith will not fail. As He prays, His divine glory shines through humanity—His face shines like the sun and His garments become white as light. Moses and Elijah appear beside Him, and the disciples are given unmistakable evidence that Jesus is truly the Son of God. Ellen White explains that Moses and Elijah also reveal the future kingdom of glory in miniature. Moses represents those who will be raised at the resurrection of the just, while Elijah represents those who will be alive and changed when Christ returns. Yet even in this scene of heavenly glory, the conversation centers on Calvary. Before the crown must come the cross. Moses and Elijah, both acquainted with suffering and loneliness, are sent to comfort Jesus with the sympathy of heaven. Then the Father speaks from the cloud: “This is My beloved Son… hear ye Him.” When the glory passes, the disciples look up and see Jesus alone. This original Christian song, inspired by The Desire of Ages Chapter 46, reflects on the Transfiguration of Jesus and the light God gave the disciples before the darkness of the cross. It points to Christ’s glory, His coming sacrifice, the hope of resurrection and the Second Coming, and the Father’s call to hear and trust His Son. When the mountain glory fades and the way ahead grows dark, Jesus remains—and His word is still sure. [Verse 1] They climbed the mountain worn and tired, As daylight slipped away; While shadows gathered round their path, Jesus knelt down to pray. He knew the suffering soon to come, The cross that He must bear; He prayed their faith would not give way When darkness met them there. [Verse 2] Upon the mount, the heavens opened, And glory filled the night; Christ’s face was shining like the sun, His garments white as light. The Man they knew in humble form, Rejected by those He came to save, Was still the everlasting Son, Though walking toward the grave. [Chorus] He gave them light before the night, His glory there was shown; So when the cross would veil His light, They could trust the One they’d known. The road to glory led through pain, The crown would follow loss; Before He’d reign at last as King, There first must come the cross. [Verse 3] Then Moses stood beside their Lord, Once called from death to rise; While Elijah, who had never died, Stood there before their eyes. Moses showed the saints who’ll rise, Elijah those transformed that day; And Christ between them stood as King, Whose kingdom will not pass away. [Verse 4] They thought His kingdom had begun, That sorrow now was done; But heaven spoke of Calvary, And what must yet be won. For Moses knew the weight of grief, And Elijah knew despair; So heaven sent them to Christ’s side, To bring Him heaven’s care. [Verse 5] The weary three had fallen asleep, Though called to watch and pray; They missed what God desired to give, As precious moments slipped away. Yet God still gave them light to hold, For darker days drew near; A glimpse of Christ in majesty, To strengthen them through fear. [Bridge] Then from the cloud the Father spoke, “This is My beloved Son;” “Hear Him” —His voice shook the mount, And fear seized everyone. They fell in fear upon the ground, Till Jesus then drew near; He touched them with familiar hands— Said, “Arise, and do not fear.” [Final Chorus] He gave them light before the night, His glory there was shown; So when the cross would veil His light, They could trust the One they’d known. The road to glory led through pain, The crown would follow loss; The Son who shone upon the mount Would triumph through the cross. [Outro] The cloud was gone, the voices stilled, The glory passed from sight; They raised their eyes and Jesus stood, Still with them in the night. So when the mountain glory fades, And darkness veils our sight, Hear the Son and trust His word For Jesus remains our light. If this song blessed you, subscribe to hear more.
