The Face at the Window (1939) is a British horror-melodrama set in Paris in 1880. The city is being terrorized by a mysterious murderer known as “The Wolf,” whose victims reportedly see a grotesque, wolf-like face at a window just before they are killed. When a clerk at the Brisson Bank is murdered and the bank is robbed, suspicion eventually falls on Lucien Cortier, a young bank employee who is in love with the owner’s daughter, Cecile de Brisson. Their relationship is opposed by their difference in social standing, and matters become worse when the wealthy and sinister Chevalier Lucio del Gardo offers to rescue the struggling bank financially—on the condition that he be allowed to court Cecile. Discovering that Cecile loves Lucien, the Chevalier schemes to frame his rival for the robbery and murders.
