Episode 1 - Meet Ann & Julie: Why We’re Here

Leadership advice is everywhere, but most of it ignores the part that actually makes or breaks teams: the way we treat people. We’re Ann Wright and Julie Caspar, and we’re starting The People Side of Leadership to bring real conversations, tough questions, and practical ideas you can use right away at work and at home. We begin by sharing our stories and why they matter for leadership development. Julie brings decades of human resources experience through HR Hotline Associates and her faculty role at Iowa State University. Ann brings years of experience in leadership coaching, training, and nonprofit management, as well as, years teaching a variety of business courses such as strategic management, leadership, and entrepreneurship. Different paths, same focus: building workplaces where people feel valued, heard, and respected. Two questions guide everything: “What do you want to see more of in the world?” and “What do you want to be known for?” We talk about workplace civility, the power of kindness, and why kindness in leadership takes confidence, not softness. We also share how small moments and “little nuggets” of insight can reshape careers when you pause to reflect and actually apply what you’re learning.
