This early morning drive takes us through peaceful countryside, rolling hills, and historic townships as we make our way from Gundagai to Cowra, NSW. With no commentary and only reggae music to set the mood, this is one of those journeys that invites you to sit back, relax, and enjoy the serenity of country roads. Our route takes us through the small but charm-filled villages of Muttama, Beggan Beggan, Wombat, Young, and Wattamondara, before reaching Cowra, a town known for its rich history, scenic landscapes, and cultural heritage. This is the kind of drive that reminds you why rural Australia is so special—where the roads are quiet, the scenery is timeless, and every town has a story to tell. 🚗 THE DRIVE – COUNTRY ROADS AT DAWN We leave Gundagai just as the first light of day begins to touch the landscape. There’s something magical about driving in the early morning—the soft mist rising from the fields, the golden glow of the sun filtering through the trees, and the stillness of the road before the day begins. Heading north, we weave through the undulating hills of Muttama, a quiet locality where the landscape is dotted with farmlands and grazing livestock. The road is narrow and winding, giving a sense of isolation and peace as the countryside unfolds before us. As we continue toward Beggan Beggan, the golden paddocks stretch out to the horizon, interrupted only by clusters of gum trees and the occasional rusting farm shed, remnants of generations past. The morning light plays across the land, casting long shadows and creating the perfect backdrop for a slow and steady drive. Passing through Wombat, we find ourselves in the heart of cherry country. This small town is famous for its cherry orchards, which bloom spectacularly in spring. Even in other seasons, the landscape holds a quiet beauty, with rolling vineyards and fruit trees adding splashes of green against the dry countryside. A little further on, we reach Young, the cherry capital of Australia. While we don’t stop here for much more than a coffee and lunch, it’s worth noting that Young is known for its rich history, beautiful gardens, and seasonal fruit-picking experiences. The town has a colonial past, and you can still see glimpses of history in its heritage buildings and old-fashioned streetscapes. Approaching Wattamondara, the roads open up again, stretching toward Cowra in the distance. By now, the morning sun is higher in the sky, and the day is truly beginning. 🏯 ARRIVING IN COWRA – WHAT IS COWRA FAMOUS FOR? The final leg of our journey brings us into Cowra, NSW, a town famous for its history, natural beauty, and cultural attractions. If you’re wondering, "What is Cowra famous for?", here are some of the key highlights: The Cowra Breakout: One of the most significant events in Australian history, the Cowra Prisoner of War (POW) Breakout occurred in 1944, when hundreds of Japanese POWs attempted to escape from a military camp. Today, Cowra has memorials, cemeteries, and historical sites dedicated to this event. Cowra Japanese Garden & Cultural Centre: This stunning five-hectare garden is a symbol of peace and reconciliation between Australia and Japan. It features beautifully landscaped grounds, waterfalls, traditional bridges, and koi ponds, making it a must-visit spot. Cowra's Wineries & Vineyards: The region is known for its cool-climate wines, with many boutique wineries offering tastings and cellar door experiences. We stopped near the Japanese Garden to set up and work for the day, but unfortunately, we didn’t get time to explore properly—so we’ll definitely be coming back!
