By the end of 1863, the Confederacy had suffered debilitating defeats that they would not recover from. Missionary Ridge is one of those key battles that helped bring the Civil War to an end. Ulysses S. Grant sent George Thomas' Army of the Cumberland against Braxton Bragg's Army of Tennessee in a climactic battle for control over the vital railroad hub of Chatanooga.
