Various of the painting “On white II” (1923) 4. SOUNDBITE (English) Angela Lampe, exhibition curator: “This exhibition is really exceptional because the visitors can follow the whole life of Kandinsky. So it's really a rare opportunity to see how he's starting in Munich with the first quite realistic landscape painting and then arrives a chromatic explosion in Murnau, in Bavaria, and then he went back to Russia. He was invited by the Bauhaus where his style changed. So Kandinsky reinvented himself in each spot, in each environment he lived. And then after Bauhaus he had to leave Germany because of the arrival of Hitler in '33 and during his last years he lived in Paris. And then again a new Kandinsky arrives, new forms, organic forms, biomorphic forms, and this is really so rare and so touching to see.” 5. Wide of the entrance to exhibition 6. SOUNDBITE (English) Angela Lampe, exhibition curator: “It was revolutionary for several reasons, but first of course the first known is that it was said for a long time that he invented abstraction in painting. But we know today that there were several artists and now we know a lot of women artists, Hilma af Klint, that he was not maybe the first. But he was the one who really was the most thoughtful about abstractions, he was a theorist and a professor. So he really developed a theory on abstraction, on painting in abstraction, and he developed theories about synesthesia, about the relationship between sound and colours and forms. And I think that really makes him so singular in the art history.” 11. Pan right of the exhibition 12. Various of the painting “Picture with a red spot” (1914) 13. Various of the painting “ImpressionV” (1911) 14. SOUNDBITE (Italian) Francesca Villanti, scientific and editorial exhibition advisor: “Gabriele Münter, who for years was Kandinsky’s partner – his life partner, certainly, but above all his partner in art and in artistic exploration – so for many, many years they travelled together, studied, and explored together. In this exhibition, we aim to give Münter the recognition she deserves as a painter in her own right, and not merely as Kandinsky’s partner; consequently, a section will be dedicated to Gabriele Münter, featuring works from the Pompidou Centre and other private collections, through which we illustrate precisely this: how she went on to continue the work they had begun together during their years in Murnau; and whilst Kandinsky subsequently pursued a very different path towards abstraction, Münter, in a sense, remained true to the explorations of the 1910s.” 15.
