Countries Resized by Military Spending Since 1850

This video redraws the world map so that every country and territory is the size of its military spending in current US dollars, from 1850 to 2025. Figures to 1948 are Correlates of War data checked against national budgets, then GMSD and SIPRI; today's borders, split for divided Germany, Vietnam and Yemen, carry each year's ruling flag and name. Data sources: Correlates of War National Material Capabilities (v7) with national statistical abstracts and League of Nations Armaments Year-Books; Global Military Spending Dataset (Barnum, Fariss, Markowitz and Morales); SIPRI Military Expenditure Database (2026); borders from Natural Earth.
