Baltic Folk Heritage Festival.
In traditional folk culture, the concept of a stage in the modern sense did not exist. Dance was not a show for passive viewing; it was a part of everyday life, rituals, weddings, and fairs.
By inviting the audience, folklore ensembles break the "fourth wall" and restore dance to its original function — uniting the community. Most social folk dances (circle dances, chain dances, simple polkas, quadrilles) are built on repetitive and intuitive movements.
The lead performers sweep the crowd along with them. The steps are designed so that a person of any age, even without choreographic training, can join the rhythm within 30 seconds. Mistakes are not judged; instead, they become a reason for laughter and fun.
At festivals like Baltica, this is the primary tool for intercultural communication. When a group from one country (such as Mexico or the Czech Republic) invites locals from Estonia or Latvia to dance, a direct dialogue of cultures occurs without words. People absorb each other's body language, rhythm, and emotions through physical contact (handshakes, dance pairings).
Historically, dancing together was a socially accepted way to meet people, find a partner, or socialize. At modern festivals, this tradition often flows from the official program into the "Dance Club" format (Estonian: Tantsuklubi), where musicians play bagpipes or accordions for hours, and hundreds of strangers whirl across the square in a single, unified flow.
