ELENA KATS-CHERNIN Piano Quintet No. 1 "The Offering"

Flinders Quartet and Benjamin Martin (piano) perform the world premiere of Piano Quintet No. 1 "The Offering" by Elena Kats-Chernin, commissioned by Flinders Quartet with support from Chris Arnold and Margot Costanzo. Recorded at Montsalvat Barn Gallery, Eltham, September 2016. Filmed and edited by Justin Batchelor. Written in five movements and kaleidoscopic in nature, The Offering draws on elements from Baroque to Charleston, moving from sparkling lightness through to a rhapsodic finale. It was Kats-Chernin's third collaboration with Flinders Quartet, following Re-Inventions and Joyce's Mob (String Quartet No. 1). Elena Kats-Chernin AO is one of Australia's most celebrated composers, with works spanning chamber music, opera, ballet, orchestral writing, film scores and beyond. Her Eliza Aria from the ballet Wild Swans was voted the highest-ranked work by an Australian composer in the 2024 and 2025 ABC Classic 100, and she composed the score for Adam Elliott's 2024 claymation feature Memoir of a Snail. Her music has been performed by all major Australian orchestras and leading ensembles internationally. Flinders Quartet is one of Australia's leading professional string quartets, based in Naarm/Melbourne on Wurundjeri Country. Since 2000, FQ has championed bold new commissions alongside the great works of the string quartet repertoire. The quartet maintains enduring collaborations with Australian composers while also championing significant international voices, bringing chamber music to audiences across Australia and around the world.
