Every autistic child will regulate differently. A strategy that helps one child may do very little for another, particularly when children have different sensory needs, communication styles and ways of recognising or understanding what they're feeling.
In this lesson, Jackie explores practical ways to help your autistic child recognise, understand, express and regulate emotions. You'll look at alexithymia and why identifying emotions can sometimes be difficult, as well as tools such as the Zones of Regulation that can help children begin connecting thoughts, emotions, body sensations and actions.
You'll then explore a range of practical regulation strategies, including breathing, grounding, movement, sensory supports, safe spaces, social stories and bilateral tapping — along with when these strategies may be useful and why no single strategy will work for every child.
Jackie also looks at how regulation skills can be learned gradually through support, practice and scaffolding, before exploring autistic burnout — what it can look like and ways to support a child whose demands have exceeded their capacity to cope.

ABOUT THE AUTISM PARENTING PROGRAM
Most parenting advice starts with what to do.
The Parental Stress Centre starts somewhere different.
We help you understand why things are happening first. Because when behaviour makes sense, better decisions naturally follow.
This free 9-week program is designed to help parents and carers better understand themselves, their Autistic child and what's happening beneath behaviour.
Throughout the program, you'll explore parental stress and self-awareness, the autistic brain, PDA, meltdowns and shutdowns, emotional regulation, skill development, school avoidance, relationships, communication, family dynamics and more.
The aim isn't to change who your child is. It's to help you understand them, support them and make more informed decisions about what they may need.
