The Gunpla community has spent decades passionately debating and criticizing specific kits that fall short of expectations, with complaints ranging from primitive, archaic engineering to frustrating structural flaws. The foundational 1980 1/144 RX-78-2 remains incredibly polarizing; veterans revere it as a historical artifact, while beginners view its mandatory painting and total lack of articulation as a frustrating scam. Early HGUC models like the Hi-Zack and Qubeley are notoriously mocked for shipping without essential accessories like beam sabers or possessing joints so weak their signature gimmicks sag under their own weight. Sometimes, a kit is hated purely for its laziness; the much-maligned HGUC Gundam Tristan from Twilight Axis infuriated builders by packaging the ancient, obsolete frame of the Gundam Alex in new armor and selling it at a modern, premium price. Even highly advanced, expensive lines are not immune to massive structural backlash. The Real Grade line's promise of detailed inner frames backfired spectacularly with the RG Aile Strike Gundam and RG Zeta Gundam, as their pre-built skeletons proved far too delicate, resulting in floppy joints, breaking pieces, and a transformation sequence that actively damaged the plastic. Beyond individual kits, the community reserves its deepest hatred for industry practices. The rise of Premium Bandai exclusives has enraged builders by locking highly desirable kits behind regional walls and artificial scarcity, fueling a predatory reseller market. This frustration, combined with the presence of cheap, brittle bootlegs from unauthorized manufacturers, proves that the fiercest battles in the Gunpla hobby are often fought over distribution and engineering rather than the designs themselves.
