How Does the Swiss Education System Actually Work?

When I first moved to Switzerland from Nigeria, the education system was one of the things I had to learn to understand. The structure is very different from what many people outside Switzerland may be familiar with — particularly when it comes to choosing between academic and vocational education. In this video, I break down the Swiss education system in a simple and practical way, including the different routes students can take after compulsory school and how those choices can eventually lead to a career, higher education, or university. I also explain the Swiss vocational education and training system (Berufsbildung), including concepts such as apprenticeships (Lehre), Schnupperlehre, vocational school (Berufsfachschule), the EFZ, and how learning in a company and attending school work together. I’ll also look at the academic route and explain how the different pathways can connect later in life. This is something I initially had to understand as someone coming into Switzerland from a completely different education system. Eventually, the vocational route became the foundation of my own career in IT. My journey took me from an integration class to an IT apprenticeship, an EFZ, professional experience, higher education and eventually cloud and cybersecurity. So this isn't just an explanation of a system I've read about — it's a system I've personally gone through.
