Continuing with this channel's recent exploration of French Late Romantic music, we come to Alexandre Guilmant. Though not as widely known as a composer as his contemporaries César Franck and Charles-Marie Widor., he still left his mark on the future of music in founding the Schola Cantorum de Paris and teaching a new generation of composers and organists. For instance, Marcel Dupré, featured elsewhere on this channel, is probably his most prominent student.
His own compositions generally featured the organ, as he served as organist for Église de la Sainte-Trinité in Paris 1871-1904 and also toured internationally, including a series of concerts at the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis, playing the instrument that now resides at Wanamaker's Department Store in Philadelphia, the world's largest fully-functioning organ. Appropriately, this recording features the largest organ in the UK, installed in the largest cathedral in the UK.
Designed by the prolific architect Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, Liverpool Cathedral is also the longest cathedral in the world, and went through several phases of construction from 1904 to 1978. Henry Willis & Sons began construction on the organ in 1923, with consecration on 18 October 1926. It consists of a fixed and portable console, each of five manuals, controlling 10,268 pipes arranged in 152 stops.
